Today, we are sharing the story of Amrita Singh, a professor who came to Karnataka from Bihar and, over the years, found herself becoming a part of the state she once knew so little about.
This is the story of a saree she wore for Suggi Sambrama, a celebration that became more than just a college event.
It became a memory.
From Bihar to Karnataka
Amrita is from Balpur, Bihar, and has been working in Karnataka for the past eight years.
When she first came to Bengaluru, everything was new.
She didn't know where to go.
She didn't know how to travel around the city using buses or autos.
The language, the culture, the surroundings — everything felt unfamiliar.
But eight years can change a lot.
Today, she navigates Bengaluru with confidence and has beautifully adapted to life in Karnataka.
In many ways, Karnataka has become a part of her journey.
And one of the beautiful ways she connected with the culture here was through its celebrations.
The Saree for Suggi Sambrama 🌾
Amrita bought this particular saree for Suggi Sambrama, a festive celebration at her college.
For her, wearing a saree that day wasn't simply about dressing traditionally.
It was about participating in the celebration and feeling connected to the people around her.
She remembers that morning clearly.
She stood in front of the mirror and carefully draped the saree.
She adjusted the pleats.
She arranged the pallu.
And then she looked at herself in the mirror and smiled.
There was something special about seeing herself in a saree that morning.
It felt traditional, elegant and festive.
But most importantly, it felt like she was becoming a part of something bigger.
When the Campus Changed
When Amrita reached the college campus, the usual academic atmosphere had completely transformed.
The campus was filled with colour and celebration.
Her colleagues were dressed beautifully in traditional attire.
Every corner seemed to become an invitation for “one more photograph.”
Between organising events, encouraging students, talking with fellow faculty members and taking photographs, everyone slowly forgot about their usual routine.
The meetings.
The deadlines.
The lectures.
For a while, they were simply enjoying the moment together.
And that's what festivals often do.
They give us a reason to pause from our everyday lives and simply celebrate being together.
A Saree That Will Always Take Her Back to That Day
Today, whenever Amrita opens her wardrobe and sees that saree, she may not remember every single detail of the Suggi Sambrama celebration.
She may not remember every conversation.
She may not remember every activity that happened that day.
But she knows she will remember the smiles.
The photographs.
The feeling of celebration.
And the feeling of being part of something special.
Because some sarees don't just carry elegance.
They carry memories.
A saree can take us back to a particular day, a particular celebration, a particular group of people — sometimes even to a version of ourselves that existed years ago.
And perhaps that is why sarees become so special in our wardrobes.
Not because they are simply beautiful garments.
But because, over time, they become part of our stories.
